TNB, GSPARX, Aeon In Nationwide RE Collaboration

TENAGA Nasional Bhd (TNB) and Gsparx Sdn Bhd are working together with Aeon Co (M) Bhd on a supply agreement for renewable energy (SARE).
Gsparx will construct, operate and maintain solar facilities across Aeon malls and Aeon BiG Hypermarkets for a period of 25 years.
The first phase of solar photovoltaic (PV) installation involved 11 Aeon malls nationwide this year, and 29 more in the next phase next year.
Aeon deputy MD Tsugutoshi Seko said the group will ensure that all its malls are equipped with solar PV panels soon.
“The partnership is a testament to our vision in ensuring no waste or little waste is produced by Aeon,” he said at the SARE signing ceremony today.
TNB chief retail officer Kamal Arifin A Rahman said the collaboration is due to both parties’ mutual goals in achieving zero-carbon emissions by 2050 through sustainable practices in their business and community ecosystems.
“Upon completing all 40 locations, the rooftop solar solutions are capable of delivering 99-megawatt hour (MWh) of solar energy per year.
“This translates into over 70,000 metric tonnes (MT) of CO2 offset per year, which is equivalent to almost 1.2 million tree seedlings grown over a decade,” he said.
Kamal Arifin also announced that Aeon had renewed its green electricity tariff (GET) subscription contract with a capacity of 36-gigawatt hour GWh in support of Malaysia’s commitment to becoming a zero-carbon country by 2050.
Meanwhile, Aeon CFO Grace Lee said there is no specific investment from Aeon through this project because it is a collaboration and an initiative from TNB to ensure Malaysia as a carbon-neutral nation before 2030.
“As a part of the overall sustainability focus, the partnership is looking at overall reducing electricity consumption and the electric cost along the process.
Besides this project, we are also looking to explore electric vehicle charging, as well as consumables for the two-wheelers,” she said.
